cork garden

IMG_2176Spring has arrived and it’s time to get busy beautifying our urban garden, aka the balcony. I have a pretty black thumb, but I’m lucky to have a husband to keep the plants I acquire alive. However, since the hubby is usually the one stepping outside to cut me a few sprigs of my hearts whim, he’s the one that has to identify the plants. I’ve been saying the last few years that I would label the plants to help him, and never got around to it season after season. Finally this year, I would make sure to the get the herbs marked and came across this great idea!
It’s a great way to use up the wine corks we accumulated during the winter.

What you need:
wine corks
a pokey thing (I used the poultry pin used for turkey)
bamboo skewers
permanent marker

  1. Pick out the corks you want to use, ones that are too ornate with patterns or text will be hard to see any writing on.
  2. Write out the name of the herb on the cork.
  3. Use your pokey thing and make a preliminary poke into the cork end (be careful and go slowly!
  4. Remove the pokey thing and insert the skewer in your pre-made hole
  5. Once you have all your signs made, trim the skewer as needed to insert into each pot. The beauty of using the longer skewers as your stick, is you can customize the height of your cork. For tall plants like dill and parsley, I left the stick longer. And for short, fuller plants, you can trim down the skewer as needed to make sure the cork “nestles” in nicely.

They would actually make GREAT favors and place card holders! Little mini succulent pots, can display a cork with each guest’s name. It would be great for weddings or showers and relevant year round.
